Fibre Broadband comes with long contract durations, which makes it unsuitable if you are looking for internet without a contract.
Mobile broadband however is available on 1-month rolling plans which can be cancelled at any time. This makes them ideal if you need temporary internet and don’t want to sign up for a long contract. You’ll also won’t need a landline or an engineer to visit.
Mobile broadband is available on a 1-month rolling plan, which can be cancelled at any time. Strictly speaking this is still a contract, but one with maximum flexibility that also has the benefit of reducing the cost of the mobile broadband device.
There is also the option of purchasing a mobile broadband device outright and signing up for a Pay as You Go data-only SIM. However, we’d recommend choosing a 1-month rolling plan as you get more data for your money and save on the cost of the device itself.
Mobile broadband on 1-month rolling plans are available on EE, O2, Three and Vodafone. They come with a bundle of data that you can use each month and reduce the cost of the mobile broadband dongle or router.
We’d recommend going with a 1-month plan over a Pay as You Go plan as you get much better value.
There is a choice of a couple of different products, which all have different use-cases and price-points.
A 5G or 4G broadband router delivers the best performance when trying to provide internet across a household. They require mains-power and work the same as a standard broadband router but connect to mobile networks instead of a fibre-cable.
Mobile Wi-Fi dongles are battery-powered portable devices that are perfect if you want internet on the move. They create a personal Wi-Fi network, and you can connect multiple devices at once.
If you are just looking to connect a single laptop, Mac or desktop PC then a USB Internet dongle might be a good choice. They often offer the best value and are extremely portable. You simply plug them into the USB port on your laptop and away you go.
If you choose a 5G device than average speeds are around 150Mbps, which is enough to stream 4K video on multiple devices simultaneously. However, speeds do vary based on coverage and network congestion and we’d recommend checking coverage in your area to get a better idea of potential performance.

Speeds are slower if you choose a 4G device with averages around 30Mbps. However, this is more than adequate if you only plan to browse the internet, check emails and stream standard video.
